EICR Remedial Works Explained: What C1, C2, C3 and FI Codes Mean

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) helps identify whether the fixed electrical installation in a property is safe to continue using. When an electrician completes the inspection, any observations are recorded using classification codes. Understanding these codes makes it much easier for landlords and homeowners to know which repairs need urgent attention and which improvements can be planned for later.

A C1 code means danger is present and immediate action is required. The electrician may make the area safe during the visit, for example by isolating a dangerous circuit. A C2 code means the issue is potentially dangerous and should be repaired urgently. Both codes need to be taken seriously, as they can result in an unsatisfactory EICR outcome.

An FI code stands for further investigation required. This means the electrician has identified something that needs more testing before its condition or level of risk can be confirmed. It should not be ignored; arrange the investigation promptly so any underlying fault can be identified and repaired. A report containing C1, C2 or FI observations is normally treated as unsatisfactory until the relevant work is completed.

A C3 code means improvement recommended. It does not usually indicate immediate danger, but it highlights an opportunity to improve the safety of the installation. For example, upgrading older protective devices may be recommended even where the installation is operating safely. Addressing C3 observations can help future-proof your property and reduce the likelihood of more serious issues developing.

Once remedial work is complete, keep clear records of the work carried out and any relevant certificates. For rental properties, make sure you understand the electrical-safety requirements that apply in your part of the UK. Always use a suitably qualified electrician for inspection, testing and repairs—electrical safety is never a DIY job.
